🏏 Merv Hughes
Merv Hughes was born at Euroa, but his organised sporting life began at Werribee during primary school. Cricket and football both claimed his enthusiasm, and Werribee Cricket Club records him among the players who started there before progressing to higher levels. A Test career and work as a national selector followed. His local football connection also endured: he became Werribee Football Club's number-one ticket holder in 1992 and a life member. The moustache and international fast bowling are familiar; the schoolboy keen to join another game belongs to the local beginning of the story.
🏛️ Thomas, Andrew and Mary Chirnside
Brothers Thomas and Andrew Chirnside developed a large pastoral business after arriving from Scotland. Their wealth funded the sixty-room mansion completed at Werribee Park in 1877 for Andrew, his wife Mary and their family. Thomas initially lived at nearby Point Cook before joining them in his later years. The scale of the house expressed the economic power accumulated through land and wool in colonial Victoria. Family life, business ambition and the labour required to sustain such a property all sit behind the building that now makes the Chirnside name familiar to visitors.
🏛️ Julia Gillard
Julia Gillard's representation of the federal electorate of Lalor brought Werribee into her parliamentary responsibilities before and during her term as prime minister. Her local connection also continued through patronage of Werribee Football Club. After national office, education remained a major focus, including chairing the Global Partnership for Education from 2014 to 2021 and leading South Australia's early-childhood education royal commission in 2023. Her association with Werribee is public service and an ongoing club relationship, distinct from her Welsh birthplace and South Australian upbringing.
